The process of making Tufted Rugs

- The hand tufted rug backing forms the base of the rug. Primary backings are typically made of woven polypropylene. A secondary latex backing is added to the primary backing to reinforce it and help hold the tufted yarn in place.
- During tufting, the backing fabric is fed through a tufting machine. Hundreds of fast moving needles punch the yarn tufts through the backing following the pattern for the rug’s design. Loop pile tufts are left uncut, while cut pile tufts are cut to create the shaggy texture.
- The hand tufted rug then moves to the finishing stages. It is washed, dried, and inspected. Then a secondary backing is adhered to firmly anchor the tufts. Trimming evens the rug’s edges and shapes it to the final dimensions. Finally, the manufacturer stamps the rug with labels indicating materials and fire safety ratings.
