How to stay warm after a swim
- Wrap up warm
- The minute you get out of the water, dry off and throw on a changing robe such as the new KitBrix Sports Poncho, perfect for swimmers, or a thick towel, you could even just start getting dressed to help your body warm up. A hat will keep any heat from escaping from your head.
- Have a drink or something to eat
- We advise a hot tea, which will keep you warm from the inside out. About 10-15 minutes after you've gotten out of the water, your body will start using any energy to make you shiver – which is highly energy-consuming – so replacing this energy fast is a good idea, even before it starts using it!
- Avoid a hot shower straight away
- By taking a hot shower, you're increasing the rate at which cold blood rushes to your warm core, which in turn will make your core temperature drop faster and lower, which isn't a combination you want. It's best to warm yourself up naturally before you take a nice hot shower.
- Our natural body temperature is usually around 37°C, so to most people, waters of around 21°C will feel cold. Tread carefully with water that reads any lower than this mark and remember that cold water drains body heat up to four times faster than cold air!
