How Big Is a Horse?

Horses are large animals. We measure horses in hands, with one hand being roughly equivalent to 10cm. The average height of a horse is approximately 16 hands, or 1.63 metres, from the ground up to the withers, which is the point where the neck meets the back. This point is always used to measure the height of horses, because it is the highest stable point on a horse's body - the head and neck move around so it is more difficult to use these in height measurements.

The tallest horse ever recorded was a horse named Mammoth, who lived in the 19th century. He measured a huge 21.2 hands (2.19 metres)! The smallest horse was a miniature horse named Thumbelina, who was just 4.1 hands (43cm) high!

What Is the Difference between a Horse and a Pony?

Ponies are different again - these are smaller even than most hotbloods, measuring less than 14.2 hands high and usually only weighing between 91 and 160kg. Ponies look stockier than hotblood horses, and a pony's body is usually the same length as its legs.

So, the main difference between horses and ponies is height - the International Federation for Equestrian Sports classes any horse measuring less than 14.2 hands high as a pony. However, there are some breeds of miniature horses, such as the Falabella, that are classed as horses, not ponies, so it isn't always a clear-cut division. Temperament is also taken into account - ponies tend to have calmer natures than horses.

Ponies are often ridden by children due to their smaller size and calm behaviour, but they can also compete in a variety of equine sports with adult riders.

QnA

Q: What is special about horses?

A: Horses have excellent hearing
Humans have only three muscles to control their ears, whereas horses have 10! This allows horses to rotate their ears nearly 180 degrees and move them independently of one another. Being able to rotate their ears lets horses hear sounds all around them without having to turn their head.

Q: Who is the oldest horse ever?

A: Old Billy
Old Billy (also called Billy or Ol' Billy) was the longest-living horse on record. Old Billy was verified to be 62 at his death. Born in Woolston, Cheshire, England in 1760, Billy adventured and became a barge horse that pulled barges up and down canals.

Q: Are horses happy in stalls?

A: Things to Know About Raising Happy Horses in Stables
Horses naturally want to roam and prefer to be able to be walking around. When horses are kept in a stall they can become bored and lead to bad habits such as crib-biting or box-walking. Boredom breakers, such toys, can provide your horse with some enrichment and entertainment.
